Boosing your Puppy and Kitten's Immune System

Kittens and puppies, with their immature immune systems, are especially vulnerable to illness, as they are constantly exposed to good and bad bacteria, viruses and fungi.  A healthy immune system distinguishes between these and helps eliminate the bad ones.  Studies have shown that antioxidants boost the immune system, and can im pro ve the response to vaccinations*.

Antioxidants are a group of vitamins and minerals that combat free radical damage, thus slowing down ageing and helping prevent disease - but they are only effective when taken in the right doses and combinations.  To pro tect your puppy or kitten’s health ensure their diet includes these antioxidants at the correct levels.

  • Vitamin E is the first line of defence. Studies by Hill’s Pet Nutrition have shown that up to 10 times the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) is required for Vitamin E to be effective as an antioxidant.  At levels below this it is effective only as a vitamin.
  • Vitamin C - cats and dogs pro duce vitamin C in their body, but additional vitamin C has a direct antioxidant effect, and ‘regenerates’ Vitamin E so that it becomes more effective.
  • Beta–carotene also supports Vitamin E by reactivating it.
  • Selenium is a mineral that is part of an internal antioxidant system in the body.  Additional selenium aids optimal immune function.
